Maya is a Latin American artist from the Philadelphia area. She grew up with an adoration of music and theater, and developed a playwriting practice through the empowerment of organizations such as Philadelphia Young Playwrights and Yes!And Collaborative Arts. Her work has since been produced in a number of independent theaters and festivals in Philly, New Orleans, and Montreal.  At 17 years young, she visited New Orleans for the first time, and was introduced to the world of community organizing and social practice. She vowed to move there, and when she finally did,  found herself suddenly immersed in the world of mask-making, puppetry, clowning, and activism. During her time spent in Montreal, QC, she shifted the emphasis from art-making in institutionalized spaces onto the importance of DIY space. Now, based again in New Orleans, her focus is on finding the intersection between the worlds of art creation and cooperative ecosystems.

She believes in art as a cheap and accessible expression that can be used to celebrate, house, and protect communities in need. She believes in giving back to the organizations that raised her and finding ways to empower low income youth through storytelling and art creation. She curates and produces interdisciplinary group shows that feature local artists, presentations from community organizers, and the proceeds of which go to an organization, group of artists, or establishment in need. In her own practice and as a participant in these shows, she make puppets, masks, write theater and poetry, and makse music using myth and origin creation. You can find her in her studio making wearable sculptures, fiddling with puppets, writing and telling stories, doodling creatures, on zoom discussing movement building for better futures, or outside installing a funky immersive installation.
